Discord gaming community server: layout and roles

A gaming community server needs read-only rules and announcements, channels for chat, clips and finding a group, voice channels for a lobby and squads, and a private room for moderators. Build it by hand in Server Settings, or give Bond one message and approve the plan it shows.

A group that plays together and wants to grow past a friends server.

Who this is for.

You have a group that plays together, a clan, a guild or the people around one game, and the server is starting to get members you do not know. You want new people to find the rules, find someone to play with and get into a voice channel fast. You want a couple of moderators who can talk in private.

For one tabletop campaign, use the D&D campaign layout instead.

The one prompt to give Bond.

An example, not a recording: the plan Bond shows before it builds anything, and what it does once you approve it.

@Bond Set up a gaming community server: a welcome category with rules and announcements channels only Moderators can post in, a community category with general, clips and looking-for-group channels, a voice category with Lobby, Squad 1 and Squad 2, and a private staff area with mod-chat. Make a Moderator role.

After the plan, Bond asks before each change: 10 times in this example. Always allow on a card stops it asking about that kind of change.

What Bond does

The gaming community server is built and access was checked.

  • Created Welcome with #rules and #announcements. Everyone can read them, and only Moderator can post.
  • Created Community with #general, #clips and #looking-for-group, open to everyone.
  • Created Voice with the Lobby, Squad 1 and Squad 2 voice channels, open to everyone.
  • Created Staff with #mod-chat, visible only to Moderator.
  • Created the Moderator role. It has no members yet, so give it to your moderators.

The access check passed: everyone can see Welcome, Community and Voice, and only Moderator can see Staff. Your existing channels were left unchanged.

This is an example, not a recording of a real run. Bond's own code draws the cards. The request, the plan, Bond's steps and its reply are written from how Bond handles a request like this one. The server, channel and member names are made up.

In Discord, without a bot.

  1. Create the Moderator role. Open Server Settings, Roles, Create Role, name it Moderator, and save.
  2. Create the Welcome category. Right-click the channel list, Create Category, name it Welcome, and add two text channels, rules and announcements.
  3. Make it read-only. Right-click the category, Edit Category, Permissions. For @everyone, set Send Messages to the red cross. Add the Moderator role and set Send Messages to the green tick.
  4. Create the Community category with three text channels: general, clips and looking-for-group.
  5. Create the Voice category with three voice channels: Lobby, Squad 1 and Squad 2.
  6. Create the Staff category with Private Category switched on, pick the Moderator role, and add a mod-chat text channel.
  7. Give the Moderator role to your moderators. Right-click a member, Roles, and tick it.

Channels created inside a category take the category's permissions, so each rule is set once on the category.

What to watch for.

  • The Moderator role this builds has no permissions of its own. It can post in Welcome and see Staff, and nothing more. To let moderators time out or kick, give the role those permissions in Server Settings, Roles, or ask Bond to and name the permissions.
  • The role is empty after the build. Give it to your moderators.
  • Squad voice channels have no size limit until you set one. Edit a voice channel and set User Limit, or ask Bond to set the same limit on every squad channel.
  • The server owner and anyone with Administrator can read the Staff category.
  • Bond leaves existing channels alone, so Discord's default #general stays beside the new one until you delete it or ask Bond to.
  • Building this uses tokens from your weekly allowance. A free account gets 600K tokens a week.

After the build.

Questions people ask.

  • What channels should a gaming Discord server have?

Rules and announcements that only moderators post in, a general chat, a clips channel, a looking-for-group channel, a lobby voice channel, two or more squad voice channels, and a private moderator channel. That is nine channels in four categories.

  • How do I add channels for more than one game?

Add one category per game with its own text and voice channels, and a role per game so members can be pinged for it. Ask Bond to add a category for the game and it builds it beside the rest without changing what is there.

  • How many voice channels do I need?

Start with a lobby and two squad channels. Add more when both squads are full at the same time. Empty voice channels make a server look dead, so fewer is better at the start.

  • How do I let moderators time members out?

Give the Moderator role the Timeout Members permission. In Discord, open Server Settings, Roles, pick Moderator and switch it on under Permissions. With Bond, ask it to give Moderator that permission. Bond only hands out a permission you hold yourself.

Ask for it in your own words.

Free to start. Bond never needs Administrator, and it shows you the plan before it builds anything.
