How to auto assign roles in Discord
Discord has no setting that gives every new member a role. Without a bot you either set the base permissions on @everyone, which every member already has, or let members pick roles in Onboarding. With Bond you name the role in one message and every new member gets it when they join.

In Discord, without a bot.
Discord gives a new member one role on its own: @everyone. Nothing in Server Settings adds a second one when someone joins. Before you add a bot, check whether you need that second role.
- If the role is only there to give basic access, use @everyone instead. Open Server Settings, Roles, Default Permissions and set what every member may do. Every member has @everyone from the moment they join, and it cannot be removed.
- If you want members to choose roles, turn the server into a Community server (Server Settings, Enable Community) and open Onboarding. Add a question with one answer per role. New members answer while they join and get the roles they picked.
- If you want members to agree to your rules first, a Community server can switch on Rules Screening in Server Settings, Safety Setup. It holds new members until they accept, but it does not give a role.
- For anything else, someone with Manage Roles gives the role by hand: right-click the member, Roles, and tick it.
A role that every member gets automatically, such as a Member role you use in channel permissions, needs a bot.

Recorded on a Bond test server on the Light tier, the tier every free plan runs on. Server, channel and member IDs are placeholders, the test bot is shown as Bond, and the steps where Bond loads its own tools or pages through a long result are left out. The test server has no plan limits, so the plan limits a step reports are left out. The Always allow line on each approval card is reworded in plain words.
The test server already had #general and a Member role below Bond's role. Bond asked once, to install the plugin, and the recording pressed Allow. The test member was a bot account. Bots are skipped by default, so Bond was asked in a second message, not shown here, to include them. The greeting also had a welcome card image, which this page does not show.

Installing takes Administrator, the same bar as any automation, because an automation goes on acting as Bond long after you asked for it. Bond itself never needs Administrator.
What Bond needs
Bond's invite already grants what this uses. It goes missing only where a channel's or the server's own settings take it away.
- Manage Roles, and Bond's highest role above the role it gives. Discord does not let any bot give a role at or above its own. Drag Bond's role up in Server Settings, Roles.
- View Channel and Send Messages in the greeting channel, and Attach Files there for the welcome card.
- Discord only reports joins to bots with the Server Members intent. Bond has it switched on.
What to watch for.
- With Rules Screening on, the role waits. Bond greets the member when they join and gives the role only once they accept the rules, so the role cannot be used to skip the screen.
- Bots that join are skipped unless you ask Bond to include them.
- If Bond is restarting or very busy at the moment someone joins, it gives the role afterwards. That member gets the role but no late greeting.
- Members who were already in the server do not get the role. Ask Bond to give it to everyone who lacks it, as a separate request.
- A join role that opens channels lets every new account in at once. If the role is your gate, use a verification button instead.
- Installing the plugin needs Administrator from you, because it keeps acting after you leave. Changing its settings later needs Manage Server.
- The Welcome plugin does not use any of your automation slots. A server without a plan can have 5 plugins installed.
Questions people ask.
Does Discord have a built-in auto role?
No. Discord gives new members only @everyone. Onboarding can give roles from the answers a member picks, and Rules Screening can hold members until they accept your rules, but neither gives one fixed role to everybody.
Can I give the role without a welcome message?
The greeting is part of the same plugin, and it needs a channel. Point it at a quiet channel such as a join log if you do not want it in your main chat, and ask Bond to turn the welcome card off.
Can Bond give more than one role on join?
The Welcome plugin gives one starting role. For several, ask Bond for an automation that gives each role when someone joins. Creating an automation needs Administrator, and it takes one of the 3 automations a free server can keep on.
Why did a new member not get the role?
Most often the role sits above Bond's highest role, which Discord does not let any bot manage. Move Bond's role above it in Server Settings, Roles. On a server with Rules Screening, the member also has to accept the rules first.
Is it free?
Yes. Every tool works on the free plan. Setting this up uses tokens from your weekly allowance. The run above shows how many tokens it used. A free account gets 600K tokens a week. Giving the role on each join uses none.
