Discord study server: layout, roles and permissions

A study server needs a read-only place for rules and exam dates, channels for questions and shared notes, voice rooms for quiet and group work, and a private room for tutors. Build it by hand in Server Settings, or give Bond one message and approve the plan it shows.

Who this is for.

You are setting up a server for one course, one exam or one study group: a class of thirty, a cohort preparing for the same test, or five friends who study together on calls. People come to ask a question, find the notes, or sit in a voice room and work. A few of you, tutors or the people who started it, keep the dates and rules up to date.

For a server with several subjects, repeat the Study category once per subject and keep the rest as it is.

The one prompt to give Bond.

An example, not a recording: the plan Bond shows before it builds anything, and what it does once you approve it.

@Bond Set up a study server for my biology course: a start-here category with rules and exam-dates channels only Tutors can post in, a study category with general, homework-help, resources and wins channels, a focus category with Quiet Focus and Group Study voice rooms, and a private tutors area. Make a Tutor role.

After the plan, Bond asks before each change: 10 times in this example. Always allow on a card stops it asking about that kind of change.

What Bond does

The study server is built and access was checked.

  • Created Start Here with #rules and #exam-dates. Everyone can read them, and only Tutor can post.
  • Created Study with #general, #homework-help, #resources and #wins, open to everyone.
  • Created Focus Rooms with the Quiet Focus and Group Study voice channels, open to everyone.
  • Created Tutors with #tutor-chat, visible only to Tutor.
  • Created the Tutor role. It has no members yet, so give it to your tutors.

The access check passed: everyone can see Start Here, Study and Focus Rooms, and only Tutor can see Tutors. Your existing channels were left unchanged.

This is an example, not a recording of a real run. Bond's own code draws the cards. The request, the plan, Bond's steps and its reply are written from how Bond handles a request like this one. The server, channel and member names are made up.

In Discord, without a bot.

  1. Create the Tutor role. Open Server Settings, Roles, Create Role, name it Tutor, and save.
  2. Create the Start Here category. Right-click the channel list, Create Category, name it Start Here, and add two text channels, rules and exam-dates.
  3. Make it read-only. Right-click the category, Edit Category, Permissions. For @everyone, set Send Messages to the red cross. Add the Tutor role and set Send Messages to the green tick.
  4. Create the Study category with four text channels: general, homework-help, resources and wins. Leave its permissions alone.
  5. Create the Focus Rooms category with two voice channels, Quiet Focus and Group Study.
  6. Create the Tutors category with Private Category switched on, pick the Tutor role, and add a tutor-chat text channel.
  7. Give the Tutor role to your tutors. Right-click a member, Roles, and tick it.

Channels created inside a category take the category's permissions, so each rule is set once on the category.

What to watch for.

  • Quiet Focus is quiet by agreement, not by permission. To enforce it, edit that voice channel's permissions and set Speak to the red cross for @everyone. That channel then stops following its category.
  • The Tutor role is empty after the build. Give it to your tutors, or nobody but admins can post in #exam-dates.
  • The server owner and anyone with Administrator can read the Tutors category. Keep Administrator to people you would show it to.
  • A second #general appears if your server still has Discord's default one. Bond leaves existing channels alone, so delete the old one yourself, or ask Bond to and approve it.
  • Bond does not read ordinary messages, so it will not answer homework questions posted in a channel. It answers when someone mentions it.
  • Building this uses tokens from your weekly allowance. A free account gets 600K tokens a week.

After the build.

Questions people ask.

  • What channels should a Discord study server have?

A rules channel and an exam dates channel that only tutors post in, a general chat, a homework help channel, a resources channel for notes and links, a channel for finished work, two voice rooms for quiet and group study, and a private channel for tutors. That is nine channels in four categories.

  • How do I make a channel only tutors can post in?

Deny Send Messages for @everyone on the channel or its category, then allow Send Messages for the Tutor role. Everyone can still read it. With Bond, say which channels only tutors can post in and it writes both rules after you approve them.

  • Can I add a focus timer or study streaks?

Bond can post on a schedule and can build slash commands that store data per member, such as a command that logs a study session. It has no built-in Pomodoro timer. Ask for what you want in a sentence and Bond says what it can build.

  • Is this different from the general server setup guide?

Yes. The general guide covers setting up any Discord server and shows a recorded run. This page is one layout for studying, with the permissions it needs and the prompt that builds it.

Ask for it in your own words.

Free to start. Bond never needs Administrator, and it shows you the plan before it builds anything.
